In the first week of December, 1997, an historic event took place in Ottawa. More than one hundred and twenty countries gathered to sign a new treaty to ban the manufacture, distribution and use of anti-personnel land mines. In spite of this significant advance, a problem of horrendous magnitude remains: the detection and removal of millions of mines that are presently deployed in 70 countries around the globe.
Recognizing this, Mines Action Canada (MAC) launched a competition at the same time as the signing of the treaty. MAC is a coalition of more than 40 non-governmental organizations, the Canadian contingent of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, a coalition of 1000 NGOs that was co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. This project was devised to encourage the development of inexpensive but effective and reliable equipment involved in the detection and removal of antipersonnel land mines. It is designed to look at incremental changes and new approaches to technologies that are part of the humanitarian demining process.
The challenge is considerable..
