Unexploded cluster bombs such as this U.S. manufactured BLU63 litter the desert and waterholes of Western Sahara posing a threat to the civilian population and UN peacekeepers alike. These Vietnam-era weapons were transferred in the 1970s from the United States to the Moroccan air force who used them against the Polisario Front. In 2006, 15 years after the conflict ended, the first non-governmental organization survey and clearance project began the huge task of finding and destroying this lethal debris.
