	Huge numbers of cluster munitions were used during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Thousands of abandoned Soviet manufactured AO 2.5 cluster munitions lie adjacent to the runway at Bagram airport. Heavy use of cluster munitions by coalition forces in 2001 added to the problem of extensive UXO contamination in the country – causing a significant increase in recorded accidents.
