Mines Action Canada is unapologetically Canadian.
More than knowledge of hockey, a taste for maple syrup and love of our spectacular landscape, MAC brings Canadian views and values to our disarmament work.
We believe in diversity and inclusion, in reconciliation, in peacekeeping and multilateralism, in the power of individuals and communities, in putting humanity first, and in working towards a safer future for us all.
Our approach to solving the problems caused by landmines, cluster munitions and other indiscriminate weapons is just as Canadian as we are - humanitarian disarmament!
Canada invented the idea of humanitarian disarmament in 1996 though the Ottawa Process to ban anti-personnel landmines when the humanitarian impact of the weapon was put at the centre of negotiations and civil society including those most effected by the weapon had a seat at the table. Since then this approach of focusing on the humanitarian impact of weapons and working together with civil society has resulted in new international law about cluster munitions, nuclear weapons and the arms trade. Humanitarian disarmament treaties help solve these global problems!
Mines Action Canada works to strengthen humanitarian disarmament and to build on this uniquely Canadian legacy.
We know that these global problems are Canadian problems too.
Mines Action Canada recognizes that Canada has long offered safety to those fleeing conflict and its aftermath. Many Canadians are Canadians strictly because they or their parents fled from the use of explosive weapons in populated areas - whether it was from Vietnam in the 1970s, Lebanon in the 1980s, the Balkans in the 1990s, Iraq and Afghanistan in the 2000s, Syria in the 2010s or the Ukrainians in the 2020s. Millions of Canadians can trace their family history back to countries heavily affected by landmines and other explosive remnants of war. The use of indiscriminate weapons has impacted hundreds of thousands of people who now call Canada home.
Whether it is landmines, explosive weapons in populated areas, cluster munitions, nuclear weapons or autonomous weapons, MAC is here with a Canadian solution to a global problem.
